Sullia: Jail term, fine for obstructing duty and escaping from custody

Sullia, Mar 5: A man who obstructed government duty and escaped from police custody has been sentenced to imprisonment and fined by the court.

In connection with a case registered at Sullia police station in 2022, Raghavan Kolikaran (24) of Tamil Nadu was arrested by Sullia police on October 5, 2024, based on a court warrant.

After being brought to Sullia, the accused was taken to the Sullia Government Hospital for medical examination before being produced before the court. At that time, he reportedly pushed aside a police personnel, causing injury, and managed to escape from custody. Subsequently, another case was registered against him at Sullia police station for the incident.

The accused was later apprehended. The investigation was conducted by Sulya Circle Inspector Thimmappa Nayak, who collected necessary evidence and filed a charge sheet against the accused.

The case was heard at the SCJ and JMFC court in Sullia. Upon finding the charges proved, Judge B Mohan Babu sentenced the accused under Section 121(1) to three years of simple imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000. In default of payment of fine, he shall undergo six months of simple imprisonment.

Under Section 132, for obstructing and assaulting a public servant in the discharge of duty, he was sentenced to one year of simple imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000. In default, he shall undergo three months of simple imprisonment.

Under Section 262, for resisting lawful apprehension, he was sentenced to one year of simple imprisonment and fined Rs 10,000. In default, he shall undergo three months of simple imprisonment.

Assistant public prosecutor Preethi M C argued the case on behalf of the government.
