Mangaluru, Mar 5: Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women, Dr Nagalakshmi Choudhary, visited the fish market located in the central State Bank area on Thursday afternoon following concerns over the difficult conditions faced by women vendors.
During the visit, she inspected both the fresh fish and dry fish sections of the market and expressed dissatisfaction over the poor sanitation and overall mismanagement. Hundreds of women, who have been selling fish for decades to earn their livelihood, shared their grievances with her.

Speaking after the inspection, Dr Nagalakshmi Choudhary stated that the lack of proper sanitation has resulted in a foul smell, which is affecting the health of women who work there throughout the day. She also pointed out that the absence of adequate water facilities for cleaning has further worsened the situation.
The women vendors complained about the lack of sufficient space for business and the absence of proper security arrangements, which they claimed has led to an increase in theft incidents.
Responding to the issue of shifting to the newly constructed market building, Dr Choudhary said that although the women are willing to relocate, they have raised concerns that the building has not been constructed in a scientific and practical manner. She added that authorities often claim a new market has been built without ensuring the required facilities are in place.
The vendors stated that they will agree to move to the new premises only if necessary facilities and business-friendly changes are made.
