Panaji, Mar 12: The Goa government plans to set up temporary floating jetties at six locations along its coastline to strengthen safety measures for tourists and beachgoers, Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte informed the legislative assembly on Thursday.

Responding to an issue raised during Zero Hour by Venzy Viegas, Khaunte said the initiative is part of a new tender issued for appointing a lifeguarding agency in the state.

“The initiative of floating jetties aims to strengthen safety measures for visitors. These floating stations will enable the quick launch of jet skis during rescue operations so that lifeguards can reach victims or persons in distress in a shorter time,” the minister said.

He added that the facility is intended to improve the efficiency of lifeguards and enhance emergency response along the state’s busy beaches.

Khaunte further informed the House that the proposal has already been withdrawn at two of the initially identified locations following feedback and concerns raised by stakeholders.

“For the remaining locations, letters have been sent to the respective panchayats, fishing communities and coastal MLAs seeking their suggestions before proceeding further,” he said.

The government will finalise the sites for the floating jetties after receiving feedback from local stakeholders, the minister added.
