Beltangady, Mar 14: A herd of wild elephants entered a plantation after breaking a solar fence and damaged crops in the Malajodi area of Mittabagilu village late Thursday night.

The elephants reportedly broke the solar fence of the plantation belonging to Anand Narayan, a resident of Malajodi. Locals said the herd included a large elephant along with calves.

After entering the plantation, the elephants destroyed more than 10 arecanut saplings and two coconut trees. The animals also damaged irrigation pipelines installed in the plantation.

According to locals, the elephants broke the solar fence at one side to enter the plantation and later exited by breaking another portion of the fence. As a result, nearly 10 fence posts and several wires of the solar fencing were damaged.

Residents said that on Friday, the sound of elephants was heard continuously from a location about 100 metres away from the damaged plantation in the Malajodi area, raising concerns among villagers.
