Mangaluru, March 14: The deputy commissioner and Regional Transport Authority (RTA) chairman, Darshan H V, has directed all electric auto drivers and owners in Dakshina Kannada to submit applications for commercial permits through the Regional Transport Office (RTO) by March 31.

Addressing a meeting of representatives from various autorickshaw drivers’ and owners’ forums on Friday, Darshan said that, according to RTO data, only 250 applications have been received so far out of roughly 2,800 e-autos in the district. “The state government has made permits mandatory for all commercial electric autorickshaws. All owners must apply without delay,” he added.

Drivers raised concerns over some conditions in the permit process. Many requested relaxation of the requirement to submit a residence certificate proving a minimum of five years’ stay within the Mangaluru City Corporation limits, citing that a majority live in rented accommodation.

Superintendent of police Dr Arun K clarified that alternate documents, such as LPG refill bills or electricity bills, could be submitted to prove the five-year residency. Drivers also objected to the condition that e-autos must be driven only by the permit holder.

Several explained that they had registered vehicles in the names of their mothers, wives, or sisters after banks rejected loan applications due to low CIBIL scores. Dr Arun advised drivers to submit such concerns in writing with their applications, which would be considered during scrutiny.

‘Relax zonal rules’

Drivers operating in rural areas of Dakshina Kannada also urged a review of zonal regulations that restrict their operational areas. They said that drivers transporting patients to hospitals in Mangaluru were penalised for violating zonal limits, and requested relaxation for emergency trips and maintenance purposes.

The Deputy Commissioner said some concessions would be considered for rural e-autos transporting patients or dropping passengers at railway stations, providing temporary relief while ensuring compliance with RTA rules.
