Kolkata, Mar 24: The discovery of a BJP worker’s body in Raidighi, located in South 24 Parganas, led to heightened tension across the region on Tuesday. While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has alleged a politically motivated killing, police have taken a different stance, arresting the victim’s wife and her alleged partner based on a family complaint.
The deceased, Kishor Majhi (39), held the position of vice-president of BJP’s Booth No. 216. The incident occurred in Mena village under the Dighirpar Bakultala Gram Panchayat within the Raidighi Assembly constituency.

On Monday night, locals found Majhi’s severely injured body near a pond close to his residence. He was immediately taken to the Raidighi Rural Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police reached the scene soon after being alerted, recovered the body, and sent it for post-mortem. Early findings indicate that the killing may be linked to a personal dispute rather than political rivalry.
During the investigation, three individuals were initially detained. Later, authorities arrested Majhi’s wife, Anima Das, along with her alleged partner, Gobinda Haldar. The arrests followed a formal complaint lodged by the victim’s father.
A relative of the deceased stated that ongoing domestic conflict, allegedly due to an extramarital relationship involving Haldar, had created tension within the household. The family dismissed any political angle in the case.
Bishwa Chand Thakur, Superintendent of Police for the Sundarbans district, confirmed that both accused are being questioned.
Despite the police’s findings, the incident has ignited a political confrontation. BJP leader Palash Rana visited Majhi’s residence and accused authorities of attempting to downplay the case. He claimed that the police and local All India Trinamool Congress leadership were misrepresenting the murder as a personal dispute to suppress the truth.
In response, Bapi Haldar of the Trinamool Congress rejected the allegations, asserting that the incident stemmed from a “love triangle” and accusing the BJP of exploiting the situation for political gain.
As investigations continue, the case remains at the center of both criminal inquiry and political debate in the region.
