Nitish Kumar set to take Rajya Sabha oath; BJP begins talks on new Bihar CM

New Delhi, Apr 10: Nitish Kumar is scheduled to take oath as a Rajya Sabha member at 12:15 pm on Friday, marking a significant political transition in Bihar. He is expected to return to Patna later in the day after the brief ceremony.

With Kumar’s move to Parliament, focus has now shifted to the formation of a new government in Bihar, where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is poised to have its first-ever Chief Minister.

Top BJP leaders are scheduled to meet in New Delhi to deliberate on the leadership choice and government formation. Senior state leaders Samrat Choudhary and Vijay Kumar Sinha, both currently serving as Deputy Chief Ministers, are already in the national capital for discussions with the party’s central leadership.

Sources indicate that Kumar is likely to resign as Chief Minister on April 14, when the NDA legislative party is expected to convene and elect its new leader.

Among the frontrunners, Samrat Choudhary is said to be the leading contender to succeed the JD(U) veteran as Bihar’s next Chief Minister.

Kumar had initiated his transition to national politics on March 30 by resigning from the Bihar Legislative Council. He was subsequently elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha on March 17, along with four other candidates from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).

The veteran leader had earlier announced his intention to step down as Chief Minister to fulfil his long-standing ambition of serving in both Houses of the state legislature and Parliament.

Kumar’s move comes just months after leading the NDA to a decisive electoral victory in Bihar, underlining his enduring influence in the state’s political landscape spanning over two decades.
