HC orders speeding green Lamborghini driver to sweep roads as punishment

Bengaluru, Apr 11: In a striking instance of corrective justice, the High Court of Karnataka directed a man accused of reckless driving in a Lamborghini to undertake community service in an unusual manner—by using the same luxury car to travel, sweep public roads, and return.

Hearing the case of a Bengaluru-based man charged with rash and negligent driving on Mysuru Road, the high court took note of his willingness to perform community service and orally instructed him: “Go in your green Lamborghini, sweep the roads, and return in the same car.”

The court observed that there is a growing tendency among some individuals to misuse high-end vehicles for speeding and flouting traffic norms. In this case, the accused had allegedly driven a luxury Lamborghini in a reckless manner, prompting the court to impose community service as a corrective measure.

The bench, presided over by Justice Nagaprasanna, orally directed that the accused must drive his own Lamborghini to the designated location, clean the roads, and return in the same vehicle.

According to case details, the incident dates back to January 20, when the accused, identified as Chiranthan, allegedly drove his Lamborghini at excessive speed and in a negligent manner within the jurisdiction of the Kengeri Traffic police station, thereby violating traffic regulations.

A case was registered against him under Section 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 177 of the IMV Act.

The accused later approached the high court seeking quashing of the FIR.

During the hearing before Justice Nagaprasanna’s bench, counsel for the accused submitted that his client was remorseful. It was also argued that provisions under the BNS allow for community service, and the accused expressed willingness to educate children about traffic rules.

However, the special public prosecutor opposed the submission, questioning the appropriateness of allowing a person who violated traffic rules in a Lamborghini to teach children about road safety. Instead, it was suggested that the accused be directed to plant trees.

After hearing both sides, the high court directed the accused, Chiranthan, to undertake road-cleaning as community service. The court said the date and time for carrying out the service would be specified in its order.
