Udupi: Absconder held After 23 years, produced before court

Udupi, Apr 15: In a significant breakthrough, Malpe police have arrested an absconding accused who had been evading court proceedings for the past 23 years.

The accused, identified as M Babu (52), son of Mohammed and a resident of Shivanagar, Bengaluru, was wanted in connection with a case pending before the court of the senior civil judge and chief judicial magistrate (CJM), Udupi.

The case involves charges under Sections 143, 147, 148, 323, 326 read with 149 of the IPC. He had been charge-sheeted as an absconder and had failed to appear before the court for over two decades.

Acting under the guidance of the deputy superintendent of police, Udupi sub-division, and the circle inspector of Malpe, a team led by Malpe police sub-inspector (Law & Order) Anil Kumar D initiated efforts over the past five months to trace the accused.

Acting on credible information, head constables Suresh Kumar and Vishwanath H tracked him down in Ramamurthy Nagar, Bengaluru.

The police team apprehended the accused on April 14, after reaching Bengaluru on April 12. He was subsequently produced before the court on April 15, 2026.

The court has remanded the accused to judicial custody until April 28.
