Mangaluru, Apr 16: The Karnataka government has released Rs 165 crore for a series of development works in Mangaluru under Phase-II of the Mahatma Gandhi Urban Development Scheme, with foundation stones set to be laid on April 18, MLC Ivan D’Souza said.
Addressing a press conference at the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) office on Thursday, he said urban development minister Byrathi Suresh will inaugurate and launch multiple infrastructure projects across the city.
The minister will lay foundation stones at 9 am near Maravoor Bridge (Rs 3 crore project), at 9:45 am near Valencia Church (Rs 1.95 crore), at 10:30 am in Chilimbigudde (Rs 2 crore), and at 10:45 am near Sunkadakatte, Urvastore. A public meeting will follow at 11 am at Ambedkar Bhavan in Urvastore.

D’Souza said the state government has approved around Rs 2,000 crore for Phase-II of the scheme across major cities including Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi, Kalaburagi, Ballari, Davanagere, Shivamogga, Vijayapura and Tumakuru, to be implemented between 2024–25 and 2026–27. Some works in Mangaluru have already commenced.
The official programme on April 18 will be held in the presence of Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister Dinesh Gundu Rao.
Under the project, several civic infrastructure works have been planned within MCC limits. These include construction of a concrete road, utility ducts and box drains from Marakada to Maravoor Bridge at a cost of Rs 9 crore.
Road development works worth Rs 9.50 crore will also be undertaken in stretches including Bijai Anagundi to Kapikad 4th Cross, Father Muller Hospital to Koti-Chennaya Circle, Valencia Circle to Gorigudda Naganakatte, and the road connecting K S Rao Road to the court complex.
Additionally, 25 other works, including concreting of roads at Bolara Seaface, K N Board Yard Road, Lobo River Road, TVS Factory Road, Canara Plywood Road and roads in the 60th Bengre Ward, will be carried out at a cost of Rs 5 crore.
Of the total allocation, Rs 124.50 crore is earmarked under the general category, Rs 28.50 crore under Scheduled Caste funds and Rs 12 crore under Scheduled Tribe funds, he added.
Garud Development Corporation chairperson Mamatha Gatti, along with leaders Shashidhar Hegde, Appi Bhaskar, D K Ashok, Prem, Keshav, Chetan, Imran, Sons and Chandrahassa Poojary, were present at the press conference.
