Kaup, Apr 18: After successfully evading the law for 13 years, an absconding convict from Bihar was arrested by the Kaup police in Bengaluru.

The arrested individual, Manoj Kumar (41), had been avoiding appearance before the Udupi court since 2012.

Case history

Manoj Kumar, a lorry driver by profession, was involved in a road accident in 2012 within the limits of the Kaup police station in Udyavar, which resulted in a person's death. Following a legal trial, the court had found him guilty and sentenced him to six months of imprisonment. However, immediately after the conviction was announced, Kumar went into hiding and failed to surrender to serve his sentence.

Under the guidance of the Deputy Superintendent of Police (Karkala-Udupi division) and the Kaup Circle Inspector, a special team was formed. The team, led by Kaup Sub-Inspectors Tejaswi T I and Shubhakar, along with Head Constable Mohammad Rafiq and PCs Ganesh and Gangadhar, tracked the accused to Yelahanka in Bengaluru.

Kumar was apprehended and produced before the court on April 16. The court upheld the six-month sentence, and the police subsequently handed him over to the Udupi District Jail to undergo judicial custody.
