Beltangady, Apr 19: Dharmasthala police have apprehended two youths in connection with the targeted sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl in a forested area near the local tourist spot, Ermayi Falls.

The arrested accused have been identified as Sumant (28), a resident of Kadurudyavara village, and Navaneeth (26), hailing from Gardadi village. The harrowing incident reportedly transpired on April 16.

According to police sources, the two men allegedly enticed the minor into accompanying them to the secluded woodland surrounding Ermayi Falls, situated within the Dharmasthala police limits. It was there that the victim was subjected to the assault.

The crime surfaced after the distressed girl confided in her family members. Recognising the gravity of the situation, her parents promptly approached the Dharmasthala police to lodge a formal criminal complaint.

Following the report, a swift investigation was launched to track down the perpetrators. Under the direct guidance of Belthangady sub-division DSP Rohini C K, a special operation was spearheaded by circle inspector Ravi B S and Dharmasthala sub-inspector Samarth R Ganigera to secure the arrests.

In a startling turn of events, it has emerged that the primary accused, Sumant, was mere weeks away from a significant personal milestone. His wedding had been scheduled to take place on May 10; however, he now faces serious legal proceedings instead of the altar.

Both individuals remain in custody as authorities continue to gather evidence to bolster the prosecution’s case.
