Bantwal, Apr 27: In a heartwarming incident, a pregnant woman gave birth to a baby boy inside a train coach at the B C Road railway station on Sunday night.
The woman, identified as Ponnamma, a resident of Savanoor in Mysuru, was traveling on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru train. Shortly after the train departed from Mangaluru, she began experiencing labor pains. Seeing her distress, a group of Muslim women traveling to Bengaluru immediately attended to her and alerted the railway officials.

Responding swiftly, the railway department halted the train at B C Road station. They coordinated with a medical team from the local Somayaji Hospital, which arrived at the station to facilitate the delivery inside the train coach. The medical team successfully conducted the delivery, and Ponnamma gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
Following the birth, the mother and child were initially rushed to Somayaji Hospital via ambulance. After a preliminary examination, doctors advised that both required further observation and shifted them to Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru. While both the mother and newborn are reported to be healthy, medical sources stated they need additional specialized care.
The train, which arrived at B C Road at 7:20 pm, remained at the station for an hour to ensure the safety of the mother and child, eventually resuming its journey at 8:20 pm.
The timely intervention of the medical team was crucial to the successful delivery. Lokesh, a driver for the Sujnana ambulance in Kalladka, reached Somayaji Hospital and transported the doctors to the railway station within just three minutes of receiving the call. Following the delivery, the baby was taken to the hospital in the Sujnana ambulance, while the mother followed in the Somayaji Hospital ambulance.
Local residents, including Samad from Kaikamba, personnel from the Bantwal City Police station, and the general public, assisted in making the necessary arrangements. A team from the Mangaluru Railway Police also arrived at the scene to gather further details. It is reported that Ponnamma is an employee at a private hospital in Mangaluru, though further confirmation is awaited.
