Kanpur, Apr 29: The UPSC Civil Services Examination is considered one of India’s toughest competitive exams, demanding not only knowledge but also discipline, analytical ability and mental resilience. Proving that determination and the right guidance can change destinies, Bharat Dutt Tiwari secured an impressive All India Rank 98 with sociology as his optional subject.
Bharat’s journey to success was not built merely on long study hours or endless materials. It was shaped by perseverance, self-reflection, and strategic preparation.

Bharat hails from Kanpur. His father, Rajukumar Tiwari, was associated with the judicial services and served at the rank of district judge. He later retired from the Allahabad High Court as OSD. Due to his father’s postings, Bharat was born in Uttarakhand. He completed his schooling at Seth M R Jaipuria School and pursued BTech in Information Technology from J P Institute, Noida. Bharat said he had an interest in studies from childhood, but was equally mischievous. Along with scoring good marks in class, he also enjoyed spending time with his group of friends.
For most UPSC aspirants, the preliminary examination is considered the biggest hurdle because of its unpredictable nature. However, Bharat cleared the prelims in every attempt. He secured final success in his fourth attempt, but managed to pass the prelims each time. Bharat said his key mantra for cracking the prelims was to study everything thoroughly before the exam.
He said aspirants should learn the basic concepts of every subject mentioned in the syllabus. Most candidates focus only on a few subjects such as history, geography and polity, but instead of following that approach, equal priority should be given to every subject.
Bharat faced setbacks twice in the mains examination and once in the interview stage. But as the saying goes, when the heart is determined to achieve something, the whole universe supports it. In his second interview and fourth attempt, Bharat finally secured an impressive All India Rank 98.
Bharat Dutt Tiwari’s inspiring success story sends a strong message to UPSC aspirants across the country: setbacks are temporary and smart preparation matters.
His journey from struggle to AIR 98 proves that consistency, adaptability and belief in oneself can turn dreams into reality.
