Goa public representatives face scrutiny over non-disclosure of assets

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi

Panaji, May 2: The Goa Lokayukta has released a list of elected representatives who failed to submit mandatory disclosures of their assets and liabilities by the March 2024 deadline, as required under law.

The disclosure gap is substantial, with a large majority of local representatives reportedly not complying. According to data made public by the Lokayukta office, nearly 98% of panchayat members, 66% of Zilla Panchayat members, and 75% of municipal councillors have not furnished their asset details.

The requirement is intended to promote transparency and accountability among elected officials, ensuring public access to information regarding their financial interests. However, the latest figures indicate widespread non-compliance across multiple tiers of local governance in the state.

The Lokayukta’s disclosure is expected to intensify pressure on defaulting representatives to submit their declarations and adhere to statutory obligations under transparency norms governing public office holders in Goa.
