Kidney disease may impact sexual health, experts highlight link

New Delhi, May 3: Medical experts have highlighted that kidney disease can significantly impact sexual health, affecting both physical and emotional aspects of intimacy, though the issue often remains under-discussed among patients.

Kidneys play a vital role in filtering waste, maintaining fluid balance, and regulating hormones in the body. However, when kidney function declines, as seen in chronic kidney disease (CKD), it can lead to toxin buildup, hormonal imbalances, and disruptions in blood circulation, all of which can influence sexual health.

Experts noted that hormonal changes are a major contributing factor. In men, reduced testosterone levels may lead to decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and poor sperm quality. Women, on the other hand, may experience irregular menstrual cycles, reduced sexual desire, vaginal dryness, and difficulties related to fertility.

Erectile dysfunction is one of the most commonly reported issues among men with kidney disease. The condition is often aggravated by associated problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and vascular damage, which impair blood flow. In women, hormonal imbalances and fatigue may result in reduced arousal and discomfort during intercourse.

Fatigue is another major concern in CKD patients. Reduced production of erythropoietin, a hormone responsible for red blood cell formation, can lead to anaemia, causing persistent tiredness and low energy levels, which negatively affect sexual desire and performance.

Apart from physical factors, psychological aspects such as stress, anxiety, depression, and body image concerns also play a significant role. Experts said that living with a chronic illness can affect confidence and emotional intimacy, further impacting relationships.

Patients undergoing dialysis may also face similar challenges, including fatigue and hormonal changes. However, doctors emphasised that a healthy sex life is still possible with proper medical guidance, management of underlying conditions, and lifestyle adjustments.

Health professionals advise patients to manage conditions like diabetes and hypertension, follow a kidney-friendly diet, maintain physical activity, and communicate openly with their partners. Seeking timely medical advice for sexual health concerns is also crucial.

Experts stressed the importance of open communication between patients and healthcare providers, noting that sexual health is a key component of overall well-being. Early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and lifestyle changes can help individuals with kidney disease maintain a healthy and fulfilling personal life
