Sullia, May 5: Two persons riding a scooter were killed in a collision with a tanker at Chapalla curve near Savanur on the Subrahmanya–Manjeshwar interstate highway on Tuesday evening.

The deceased have been identified as Yagnesh (20), a resident of Goltamajalu near Kalladka in Bantwal taluk, and Jagan (21), a resident of Bharanya in Panaje village. The accident occurred while they were returning after visiting a temple in Alankaru village.

Yagnesh, who was working as a delivery boy, is survived by his father, mother, and brother. Jagan was a final-year BCom student at a private college in Puttur. He had been staying since childhood at his grandmother’s house in Kollakeeru near Kalladka and is said to have travelled abroad for an internship. He is also survived by his father, mother, and brother.

The incident occurred at around 5 pm when the duo was returning home on a scooter after visiting a temple in Alankaru. At Chapalla curve, their vehicle collided with a water supply tanker coming from the opposite direction. The tanker driver reportedly tried to avoid the collision by turning left, but the vehicle lost control, turned nearly 90 degrees, and fell into a roadside ditch. The scooter got trapped under the tanker’s wheel, causing both riders to be pinned underneath. Yagnesh died on the spot, while Jagan, who sustained severe injuries, died on the way to the hospital. The impact of the accident was so severe that parts of their bodies were dismembered.

Bellare police station officer Eerayya Doontoor visited the spot, and a case has been registered at Bellare police station.

During the incident, another bike rider coming along the same route applied sudden brakes, causing the bike to skid. Two persons sustained minor injuries in the mishap. Traffic movement was disrupted for some time due to the accident.

Locals said that accidents have occurred earlier at the same spot, which is known for its dangerous curve. They warned that more accidents are likely if corrective measures are not taken.
