Moodbidri, May 10: In a tragic development to the bus accident that occurred on May 9, a 54-year-old woman riding pillion on a scooter passed away after the overturning private bus crashed into their two-wheeler on the national highway at Bannadka.

The deceased has been identified as Geetha (54), a resident of Moodumarnadu village under the Padumarnadu gram panchayat. Settled in Mumbai, she had recently arrived in her hometown for a holiday.

The devastating accident took place on Friday when a private bus, travelling from Karkala to Mangaluru, lost control and overturned near the Soans Farm in Bannadka. As it toppled, the heavy vehicle rammed into a scooter moving on the roadside, completely mangling the two-wheeler.

Geetha, who was travelling as a pillion rider with her relative, sustained grievous injuries to her head and legs in the collision. She was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Moodbidri. However, despite the doctors' best efforts, her treatment proved ineffective and she breathed her last.

The scooter rider, who also suffered serious injuries in the crash, is currently admitted to the hospital and is undergoing treatment.

As previously reported, the accident also caused injuries to several passengers travelling in the bus. According to updated information, around 16 bus passengers sustained injuries when the vehicle overturned. Moodbidri police had visited the spot to conduct an inspection and investigate the incident.

She is my first cousin. I wish she gets justice and the reckless bus driver gets arrested. I feel all buses running in Udupi- Mangalore area must have dashcams. So that during such incidents we know what actually happened. Also some sorta speed inhibitors should be installed in buses running in these areas.

Once again I am painfully made aware of the deathly slope/climb that Bannedka is and has been since my growing years. I have known many who have met with accidents on that stretch. Some have survived but some not so lucky have died
