Chennai, May 14: Suriya’s much-anticipated action drama Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji, is set for theatrical release on May 14 amid massive fan excitement. However, uncertainty surfaced ahead of the first shows after several theatres temporarily paused online ticket bookings.

The film, which stars Trisha Krishnan opposite Suriya, has generated strong buzz ahead of release and recorded impressive advance booking numbers across Tamil Nadu.

According to trade tracker Jerin Georgekutty, Karuppu crossed Rs 1.90 crore in opening-day advance bookings within nearly 36 hours of ticket sales going live, reflecting strong audience response.

Amid growing speculation over the sudden halt in bookings, director RJ Balaji addressed fans through a message posted on X on May 13.

He said the producers were trying their best to resolve the issue and expressed confidence that the film would overcome the latest hurdle as it had done throughout its long production journey.

“This film has always had hurdles, and somehow God has made us sail through all that and here we are after 32 months,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, theatre chains also responded to fan concerns. Uma Rajendra Cinemas stated that certain “internal issues” were being worked out and assured audiences that bookings would reopen once clearance was received.

At the same time, Vasu Cinemas announced that it would not be screening the film. Despite the decision, the theatre extended wishes to RJ Balaji, Trisha and Suriya, expressing hope that the film would perform strongly at the box office.

In a major boost to the release, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay granted permission for special 9 am shows of the film shortly after assuming office.

The production house thanked the Chief Minister for approving the early morning screenings and confirmed that the film’s first-day-first-show would begin at 9 am on May 14.
