Mumbai, May 30: Bollywood star Alia Bhatt is set to portray one of her most unconventional characters yet in the upcoming action thriller Alpha, where she will reportedly step into the role of a highly trained assassin rather than a traditional spy.
Industry buzz surrounding Bhatt's character has been gaining momentum on social media, with sources associated with the production revealing that the actress will play a lethal operative raised and trained specifically for combat and targeted killings.
According to sources close to the project, her character differs significantly from the heroic figures previously introduced in the YRF Spy Universe. Instead of being a conventional intelligence agent, she is said to be an "alpha killer"—a dangerous and independent protagonist who operates by her own rules.
The character is believed to be part of a deliberate creative shift envisioned by Yash Raj Films chief Aditya Chopra. The goal, according to insiders, is to introduce a more complex and unconventional lead character who is not necessarily defined by traditional notions of right and wrong but by her strength, unpredictability, and individuality.
Sources suggest that the film aims to present a modern action hero whose choices and actions challenge conventional expectations, reflecting evolving audience preferences for morally layered and dynamic protagonists.
The project is also being viewed as a significant creative expansion of the YRF Spy Universe, placing a female lead at the centre of a large-scale action spectacle. The film's narrative and action sequences are reportedly designed around Bhatt's character, making her the driving force behind the story.
While speculation about the character continues to grow, representatives of Yash Raj Films have neither officially confirmed nor denied the reports. A spokesperson for the studio stated that audiences should wait for the first promotional material from the film before drawing conclusions about the storyline and characters.
Alongside Bhatt, the film features Sharvari in a key role, while Bobby Deol is expected to play the primary antagonist. Veteran actor Anil Kapoor also has an important role in the film.
Directed by Shiv Rawail, who previously helmed the acclaimed The Railway Men, Alpha is scheduled for a theatrical release on July 3 and is expected to be one of the biggest action releases of the year.
