Mau, May 31: Choosing the fields over a conventional job, an ITI graduate from Uttar Pradesh has turned a one-acre plot into a highly profitable venture. Akhilesh Maurya, a resident of Mau, earned an impressive Rs 1.5 lac in just 23 days by cultivating organic cucumbers, proving that modern agriculture can yield far higher returns than a regular salary.

Guided by a local horticulture officer and inspired by his father's farming background, Maurya decided to bypass traditional employment after completing his education. He instead embraced crop diversification and modern agricultural techniques to maximize his land's potential.

From student to successful farmer

Maurya planted the cucumber saplings in March, utilizing the raised-bed farming method coupled with a highly efficient drip irrigation system. He opted for premium cucumber varieties, including Syngenta, Clause’s Arno, and Delhi’s SIR.

Harvesting commenced in early May. With the assistance of the horticulture department, Maurya's organic farming experiment quickly transformed into a robust source of income. He currently employs seven to eight labourers daily to manage the steady flow of harvesting activities.

High yields and market success

Maurya is harvesting between seven to eight quintals of cucumbers every day from his one-acre land. Since the first of May, he has successfully harvested and sold approximately 10 tonnes of the organic produce.

  • Initial selling price: Rs 14 to Rs 15 per kilogram

  • Current market rate: Over Rs 20 per kilogram

The steady rise in market prices has significantly boosted his overall revenue, allowing him to capitalize on the high demand for fresh, organic vegetables.

Low investment, maximum returns

The financial breakdown of Maurya's venture highlights the lucrative potential of smart farming:

  • Total initial investment: Rs 30,000 (covering drip irrigation installation and raised bed preparation)

  • Revenue generated: Rs 1.5 lac within 23 days of harvesting

Maurya advocates for cucumber farming, noting that proper planning, crop selection, and efficient irrigation systems can lead to exceptional profit margins with comparatively low initial capital. His success story aligns with a growing trend across the country, where educated youth are increasingly exploring horticulture and organic farming as viable, high-return career alternatives.
