Chennai, Jun 3: Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and Tamil Nadu chief minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday announced that the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu, for which elections are scheduled on September 18, has been allocated to alliance partner the Indian National Congress.
In a brief statement issued from the party headquarters, Vijay said the decision was taken as part of the TVK-led alliance arrangement in the state. The move is being seen as an important step towards consolidating ties among alliance partners and strengthening opposition unity ahead of upcoming political contests.

The announcement follows a meeting between Vijay and senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram in Chennai a day earlier. The interaction had fuelled speculation about possible seat-sharing discussions and the future course of cooperation between the two parties.
Although neither side publicly disclosed details of the meeting, political observers had anticipated a significant development regarding the forthcoming Rajya Sabha election. Sources within the alliance indicated that discussions centred on maintaining coordination among partners and ensuring consensus over the Upper House candidature.
The Congress is expected to announce its nominee for the Rajya Sabha seat in the coming days. Party leaders have welcomed the allocation, describing it as a sign of mutual confidence and cooperation within the alliance framework.
The election is considered strategically important as the TVK-led alliance is believed to possess the numerical strength required to secure victory. In addition to support from TVK legislators, the coalition is also backed by five independent and allied MLAs, further enhancing its position in the electoral college.
Political analysts believe the decision sends a message of cohesion within the opposition bloc and could help reinforce alliance unity in Tamil Nadu. Attention is now likely to shift to the Congress candidate and the broader political significance of the alliance’s coordination ahead of future elections.
