Ferozepur, Jun 6: At least nine people were killed and several others injured after a pickup truck carrying 28 passengers collided head-on with a trailer on the Ferozepur-Fazilka road in Punjab during the early hours of Wednesday.

According to reports, the victims, including members of a family and their relatives from Jalalabad, were returning home after performing the post-cremation rituals of an elderly woman when the accident occurred.

The impact of the collision was severe, with four persons — three men and one woman — dying on the spot. Five others later succumbed to their injuries while undergoing treatment, taking the death toll to nine.

Police and senior administrative officials rushed to the scene and supervised rescue operations. The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital, while several critically injured victims were later referred to a specialised medical facility in Faridkot for advanced treatment.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.

The tragedy left family members devastated as they gathered at the accident site to mourn the loss of their loved ones.

Meanwhile, local residents expressed concern over the increasing number of accidents on the Ferozepur-Fazilka highway, describing the stretch as an accident-prone zone that has witnessed several fatal crashes in recent years.

Demanding immediate action, residents urged the government to widen the highway and improve road safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
