Pernem, Jun 8: Heavy monsoon rains have washed away the temporary service road connecting Chandel and Hasapur across the Kalne River, disrupting a vital transport link for residents of Hasapur village in Pernem taluka.

The service road had been constructed as an alternative route while a new bridge was being built at the site. With the old crossing dismantled to facilitate the bridge construction, the temporary road had become the only access route connecting Hasapur with the rest of the taluka.

The bridge project, which began around four months ago, is currently in its final phase. However, the first spell of monsoon showers damaged the service road, causing difficulties for villagers in commuting and transporting essential goods.

Following the disruption, local MLA Pravin Arlekar visited the site and reviewed the situation with concerned officials.

After the inspection, authorities decided to allow two-wheelers and light four-wheeled vehicles to use the nearly completed bridge as a temporary measure to restore connectivity. Heavy vehicles will not be permitted until the bridge is fully completed and certified safe for regular traffic.

Arlekar said the arrangement would provide immediate relief to residents while ensuring that construction work on the bridge continues without interruption. He also directed officials to closely monitor the site and take necessary steps to minimise inconvenience to the public during the monsoon season.
