Chennai, Jun 9: Actor Dhanush has penned an emotional tribute to tennis legend Rafael Nadal after watching the Netflix documentary Rafa, saying the film gave him a deeper understanding of the challenges the former world No. 1 faced throughout his career.

In a social media post shared on June 8, Dhanush described the documentary as a moving experience and admitted he regretted criticising Nadal during difficult moments on the court. Calling the 22-time Grand Slam champion his "GOAT", the actor said the documentary revealed the pain, stress and anxiety that accompanied Nadal's rise to the top of world tennis.

Reflecting on the film, Dhanush said he now better understands the physical and mental struggles Nadal endured while continuing to compete at the highest level. He apologised for the times he shouted at his television when Nadal lost points, sets or matches, saying he had not fully appreciated the burden the tennis star was carrying.

The actor praised Nadal's resilience and determination, noting that the Spaniard repeatedly battled injuries and setbacks while continuing to give his best on the court.

Dhanush also said the documentary changed his perception of Nadal's famous on-court rituals. Referring to habits such as arranging water bottles in a specific manner, adjusting his hair and repeatedly pulling at his shorts, the actor said he now views those actions as coping mechanisms rather than simple superstitions.

According to Dhanush, the routines reflected Nadal's efforts to manage anxiety, stress and the physical demands of elite-level competition.

The actor further highlighted Nadal's remarkable achievements despite enduring numerous injuries and a chronic foot condition throughout his career. He suggested it was difficult to imagine what the Spaniard might have accomplished had he not faced those physical challenges.

While acknowledging the achievements of fellow tennis greats Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, Dhanush said Nadal would always remain his greatest player of all time.

Concluding his tribute, the actor thanked Nadal for sacrificing his body and soul for the sport and for inspiring millions of fans across the world through his perseverance and achievements.

The documentary Rafa, which chronicles Nadal's journey, premiered on Netflix on May 29.
