Karur, Jun 9: A devastating road accident on the Karur–Dindigul National Highway in Tamil Nadu's Karur district claimed the lives of three people, including an eight-month-pregnant woman, during the early hours of Tuesday. Two others, among them a two-year-old child, suffered serious injuries and are receiving medical treatment.

The victims who lost their lives were identified as V. Aravind (30), his wife A. Janani (28), and the driver of the car, P. Veera (40). Aravind and Janani were residents of Karuthi Veeranpatti near Usilampatti in Madurai district, while Veera belonged to Nethaji Nagar in Usilampatti.

The injured include the couple's two-year-old daughter, A. Vaveera, and P. Pandithurai (32), a resident of Kalaivanar Street in Aravakurichi. Both were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they continue to undergo treatment for severe injuries.

According to police officials, the family was travelling from Bengaluru to their hometown in Madurai district after a visit. Veera was driving the vehicle when the accident occurred at around 6 a.m. near the Esanatham Cross Cut Road junction.

Preliminary investigations suggest that a motorcycle travelling ahead of the car allegedly attempted an abrupt right turn across the highway. In an effort to avoid a collision, the driver reportedly swerved the vehicle sharply. The sudden manoeuvre caused him to lose control, and the car crashed into a van that had been parked along the roadside.

The impact was severe, leaving the front section of the car completely wrecked. Aravind, Janani and Veera sustained fatal injuries and died instantly at the scene. The child and the motorcyclist suffered grievous injuries.

Following the accident, personnel from the Aravakurichi police station rushed to the location and carried out rescue operations. The injured were extricated from the damaged vehicle and transported to a government hospital for emergency medical care.

The bodies of the deceased were later recovered and sent for postmortem examination. The crash briefly disrupted traffic on the busy national highway before normal movement was restored.

Police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation to determine the precise circumstances that led to the fatal collision.
