Toddler dies after coconut falls on him in Brahmavar

Brahmavar, Jun 11: In a tragic incident, a one-and-a-half-year-old boy died after a coconut fell from a tall tree and struck him on the head near his residence in Heranje, Brahmavar.

The deceased child, identified as Daksh, was the son of Prashanth Poojary and Suchitra Poojary. The couple also has a six-year-old daughter, Diya, who is studying in class 1.

According to family members, the incident occurred at around 8:15 am on Tuesday, June 9. Suchitra was carrying Daksh in her arms while accompanying her daughter to board the school bus. As she was walking a short distance from their house, a coconut reportedly fell from a tree estimated to be over 40 feet tall and struck the toddler on the head.

The child sustained severe head injuries and was immediately rushed to KMC Hospital, Manipal, where doctors performed emergency surgery. However, due to extensive brain injuries caused by the impact, Daksh could not be saved despite intensive medical treatment.

Prashanth Poojary has been running a small fast-food cart in Brahmavar for the past 13 years and is well known in the locality.

The untimely death of the young child has plunged the family and the community into grief. A large number of relatives, friends, and local residents gathered for the funeral, which was held near the family's residence on Wednesday.

    Really tragic and sad thing.Why should coconut chose this toddler?As I was small mother was always warning and saying just see a coconut is dried and should avoid going under the tree but take way far from this.So find home people too should sometimes careful to see and avoid going under a coconut tree so long dry coconuts are there But same time its ones time comes nothing can prevent .May God give the toddlers soul a better place in Heaven and heartfelt sympathies to family.

    just cannot digest the tragedy...such a small baby...may god bless the soul...death comes like a thief...no doubt. Hope the parents and sibling will have the courage to bear this extremely sad happening.

    Such incidents are common and in my life twice i was saved from such unprecedented bad incidents. Once in our own and the 2nd incident while walking in a approach way next compounds tree. I wa alerted both the times by the noice when the coconut rolling downwards on the frond (modal) with some noise and alerted me of impending danger right on my head. Fraction of a second dived to save my life. God's grace! Thanks to Almighty.

    May his soul rest in peace. But I have to say this—most of our parents and families here don't really understand the small dangers that are right there in front of us in our own backyards and neighborhoods. That coconut tree? It needs a proper fence around it, full stop. When I'm in Mangalore and I tell people, "Stay away from that tree when the coconuts are getting brown," half of them just laugh it off. "Arre, nothing will happen," they say. Nothing will happen! As if a 2kg coconut falling on your head is some kind of joke. It's a cultural thing with us, I think. We're too casual about everything—potholes that can swallow a car, uncovered manhole covers that are basically waiting to break someone's leg. Nobody thinks it's a big deal until something actually happens. In the developed countries, they don't mess around with these things. They see a small hazard and they fix it immediately. Health and safety—that's priority number one for them, not something you deal with after someone gets hurt.

    RIP child. Government should order to fell all the coconut trees inside a home compound, which are taller than 7 or 8 feet. the longer the tree, the harder to pluck the dried coconuts.

    So unfortunate...RIP Daksh. Don't understand why old people used to plant coconut trees around the home though there are so much dangers especially during rainy seasons.

    Once upon a time even our Mangalore City was full of tall coconut palms. Coconut palm is the most profitable and useful among many plantations. Where do you expect to plant it if a household has just 5 cents of land? Of course what has happened is highly unfortunate and very sad. Yesterday too I read about a man losing his life by coming under a falling coconut palm although a death by falling coconut is rare among the rarest. There are cases of people getting injured by falling fronds. Also there are many instances of lightning strikes on coconut palms which pose greater danger to those living around.
