St Charles PU College marks World Environment Day with textile recycling drive

Media Release

Bengaluru, Jun 12: The NSS unit of St Charles PU College observed World Environment Day with a sustainability-focused initiative in collaboration with GUDSWAP, encouraging students and staff to promote responsible consumption through textile recycling.

The ‘Reuse with Purpose’ collection drive was inaugurated by Principal Sr Elizabeth Leo in the presence of NSS programme officer Mary Medona D’Couto and faculty members. As part of the initiative, students and staff donated pre-loved garments for recycling and upcycling, helping extend the life cycle of textiles and reduce landfill waste.

The drive collected 280 kg of used clothing, which organisers said helped divert a significant amount of textile waste from landfills. The initiative is also estimated to have prevented 2.18 tonnes of carbon emissions and conserved approximately 2.18 lac litres of water that would otherwise have been required for the production of new garments.

Addressing the gathering, Sr Elizabeth Leo commended the efforts of the college community and highlighted the importance of environmental responsibility through everyday actions.

The collected garments will be recycled and redistributed through GUDSWAP, reinforcing the message of sustainable living and circular fashion.

The programme concluded with NSS volunteers taking a pledge to work towards environmental conservation under the theme, ‘Restore the Earth, One Thread at a Time'.
