Huge boulder crashes into Vasco House, residents escape unhurt

Panaji, Jul 1: A massive boulder rolled down a hillside and crashed into a house at Voddant in Vasco on Tuesday morning, damaging part of the structure and triggering panic among local residents. No injuries were reported as the occupants escaped unhurt.

The boulder struck the house belonging to Pramodini Naik, causing significant damage to a portion of the building. Neighbours rushed to the spot after hearing a loud crash and alerted the authorities.

Personnel from the Vasco Fire and Emergency Services arrived at the scene shortly after being informed and inspected the affected house. Officials also examined the surrounding area to ensure there was no immediate danger of additional rocks falling from the hillside.

The incident has renewed concerns over the safety of houses situated at the foothills in the area, particularly during the monsoon season when continuous rainfall increases the risk of landslides and rockfalls.

Vasco Congress leader and former Mormugao Municipal Council chairperson Nandadeep Raut, who visited the site, alleged that he had repeatedly urged the government over the past several years to construct a retaining wall at the vulnerable location but received no response.

"I have submitted several representations to the authorities over the years seeking the construction of a retaining wall at this vulnerable location. Unfortunately, nothing has been done despite repeated requests. Today's incident could have easily claimed lives," Raut said.

He further criticised the state government, alleging that it had failed to address public safety concerns while residents continued to face risks during every monsoon.

Local residents have urged the authorities to immediately assess the stability of the hillside, remove loose boulders and construct a permanent retaining wall to prevent similar incidents in the future.
