Teen electrocuted in rainwater in Thane

Thane, Jul 2: A 17-year-old girl died after being electrocuted during heavy rain in Mumbra in Maharashtra's Thane district, raising fresh concerns over electrical safety during the monsoon.

The victim, identified as Aaliya, a resident of B-Wing of Yasmin Park, reportedly stepped out of her residential building when she came into contact with rainwater that had become electrically charged.

Family members and local residents rushed her to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Police have sent the body for post-mortem examination and launched an investigation to determine how the rainwater became electrified and whether any negligence was involved.

Following the incident, local corporator Shoaib Dongre visited the spot and urged the administration to conduct a comprehensive inspection of electrical infrastructure in the area. He also called for immediate measures to prevent similar tragedies during the ongoing monsoon season.

The incident came a day after two young women were hospitalised after suffering electric shocks from an exposed wire in a waterlogged area beneath the Nerul LP Bridge in Navi Mumbai. The rainwater had reportedly become electrified due to a short circuit.

A video of the rescue of the two women during heavy rain later surfaced on social media. The Mayor condemned inadequate safety measures, ordered an inquiry and directed authorities to carry out repairs to prevent similar incidents.

The back-to-back incidents have once again highlighted concerns over exposed electrical infrastructure and the dangers posed by waterlogged areas during the monsoon. Authorities are investigating both cases to fix responsibility and prevent such fatal accidents in the future.
