Muscat, Jul 12: Oman on Sunday lodged a formal protest with the Iranian ambassador following an attack on its territory, marking a rare public rebuke of Tehran by the Gulf nation.

According to Oman's state media, the government expressed "profound dismay" over the incident and stressed the need to uphold the principles of state sovereignty, good neighbourliness and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

"Oman expresses its profound dismay at these irresponsible acts and underscores the imperative of adhering to the provisions of state sovereignty, good neighbourliness and non-interference in internal affairs," the state news agency said in a post on social media.

The protest comes just a day after Oman hosted Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi for discussions on the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important shipping route that has witnessed heightened tensions amid the ongoing regional conflict.

Oman, which has traditionally maintained cordial relations with both Iran and Western countries, has often played the role of mediator during regional disputes. Its decision to publicly protest the attack reflects growing concern over escalating hostilities in the Gulf region.

The latest development comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East, with repeated attacks on commercial shipping and military exchanges raising fears of a wider regional conflict.
