Panaji, Jul 12: Goa Police have arrested a 24-year-old man wanted in a murder case registered in Punjab from North Goa's Mandrem and will hand him over to the Punjab Police for further investigation, officials said on Sunday.

The accused, identified as Diljeet alias Rahul, a resident of Amritsar, was apprehended by personnel of the Mandrem Police Station during a routine patrol near the Bhumika Temple at Ashwemwada on Saturday.

According to police, the patrol team noticed the man behaving suspiciously near the temple. When questioned, he allegedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation for his presence in the area and was taken to the police station for further inquiry.

His identity was later confirmed as Diljeet alias Rahul, son of Kuldeep Singh, a resident of Baghpura on Tarn Taran Road in Amritsar.

Police said his responses during interrogation were found to be inconsistent and unsatisfactory, following which he was arrested under Section 35 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

Further verification revealed that Diljeet was wanted in connection with Crime No. 96/2026 registered at a police station in Amritsar.

The case has been registered under Sections 103 (murder), 109 (attempt to murder), 190 (offence committed by an unlawful assembly) and 191 (rioting) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act relating to the illegal possession and use of firearms.

Goa Police immediately informed the concerned police station in Amritsar about the arrest.

The accused has been remanded to judicial custody. A Punjab Police team is expected to arrive in Goa on Monday to secure his transit remand and take him to Punjab for further investigation into the murder case.
