Anti-inflammatory diets cannot cure arthritis, but healthy eating may help manage joint pain: Expert

Daijiworld Media Network – Mumbai

Mumbai, Jul 17: Anti-inflammatory diets have become a major wellness trend on social media, with several influencers promoting foods such as turmeric, ginger, seeds and specific elimination diets as solutions for joint pain and arthritis. However, medical experts caution that while nutrition plays an important role in overall health, no particular food or diet can reverse arthritis or repair damaged joints.

Dr Akhilesh Rathi, Director of Robotics, Joint Replacement and Orthopaedic Surgery at Sri Balaji Action Medical Institute, New Delhi, said that healthy eating should be considered only one part of a broader approach to joint care that includes exercise, weight management and appropriate medical treatment.

“Patients increasingly come after watching videos or reading social media posts claiming that a particular diet has cured someone's arthritis. While healthy eating can help reduce inflammation and improve overall health, there is no single food or diet that can reverse arthritis,” Dr Rathi said.

He explained that an anti-inflammatory diet mainly focuses on consuming vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, healthy fats such as olive oil and omega-3-rich foods like fatty fish. At the same time, it encourages reducing the intake of processed foods, sugary beverages, refined carbohydrates and excessive saturated fats.

According to experts, such dietary patterns may help reduce inflammatory markers and improve symptoms like stiffness and discomfort, especially among people with inflammatory forms of arthritis. However, osteoarthritis, which is the most common type of arthritis, is primarily linked to ageing, previous injuries, genetics, excess weight and muscle weakness.

Dr Rathi noted that one of the biggest advantages of an anti-inflammatory diet is maintaining a healthy body weight. Even a small reduction in weight can significantly reduce pressure on weight-bearing joints such as the knees and hips, improving mobility and reducing pain.

He advised people to focus on sustainable eating habits rather than searching for “miracle foods”. A diet rich in colourful fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, whole grains and adequate protein can support joint health by reducing oxidative stress, maintaining muscle strength and improving overall body function.

The doctor also warned against popular online claims that eliminating foods such as tomatoes, potatoes, dairy products or gluten can cure arthritis. Unless a person has a diagnosed allergy, intolerance or medical condition, there is limited scientific evidence supporting such restrictions.

Similarly, expensive supplements and detox diets promoted online often lack strong scientific backing and may even cause nutritional deficiencies when followed without proper guidance.

For individuals suffering from arthritis, experts recommend combining a balanced diet with regular physical activity, strength training, maintaining a healthy weight, taking prescribed medicines when required and seeking timely medical advice.

“Food should be viewed as a long-term investment in joint health rather than a quick fix. Effective arthritis management comes from a combination of proper nutrition, exercise, weight control and evidence-based treatment,” Dr Rathi added.
