Mangaluru, Jul 18: What was once a lush green hill on the outskirts of Mangaluru is now at the centre of growing public outrage, with residents alleging that rampant illegal stone quarrying has transformed Saripalla's Kolchar hill into a dust-filled danger zone.
For years, locals claim that large-scale quarrying has continued in the area in blatant violation of mining regulations, while alleging that the department of mines and geology has failed to take effective action despite repeated complaints.

Residents say the relentless operation of heavy machinery and stone crushers has turned their daily lives into a nightmare. The constant roar of equipment and thick clouds of dust have robbed families of sleep, while the once-serene surroundings have been replaced by pollution and noise. "Our peaceful village has become unlivable," said local resident Jesinta Lobo.
The situation has been worsened by the continuous movement of heavily loaded stone-laden trucks, which, according to residents, has severely damaged the Saripalla road. During the monsoon, the road turns into a muddy stretch, while in summer, passing vehicles raise massive clouds of dust. Motorists are reportedly forced to navigate dangerous potholes every day, increasing the risk of accidents.
Health concerns have also become a major issue. Locals allege that prolonged exposure to dust has led to a rise in respiratory illnesses such as asthma, persistent cough, and skin ailments. Several children from the locality have reportedly required hospital treatment for breathing-related problems.
Farmers, too, claim they are bearing the brunt of the quarrying activities. They allege that muddy runoff from the quarry has entered nearby agricultural fields, damaging crops and affecting their livelihood.
Frustrated by what they describe as official inaction, residents have warned that they will launch a large-scale protest if the alleged illegal quarrying continues unchecked.
With public anger mounting, villagers are urging the Dakshina Kannada district administration to immediately investigate the allegations, halt any illegal quarrying operations if found, restore damaged roads, and safeguard the health, environment, and livelihoods of people living around Kolchar hill.
The once-vibrant green landscape now stands as a stark reminder of the environmental cost that residents say they are paying every single day.
