CSIR lab develops glue for rapid wound closure

Kolkata, Aug 8: The Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), a laboratory under the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has developed a unique adhesive to close wounds following surgeries and in accident cases, officials said on Saturday.

The product has been licensed and IICT has already partnered with a pharmaceutical company for its launch. The laboratory is now looking for additional industry partners to facilitate wider commercialisation of the technology.

According to researchers, the indigenous tissue adhesive is biocompatible and based on alkyl 2-cyanoacrylate technology. It is designed for rapid wound closure and tissue sealing, providing instant bonding under moist conditions and reducing the need for sutures in selected surgical procedures.

The adhesive has undergone clinical trials and has been declared safe for surgical use.

Researchers said the product bonds rapidly in moist environments, making it particularly suitable for trauma care and emergency medical procedures. It can also be used for tissue sealing during surgeries, both with and without sutures.

“It is instant and ready to use, requiring no special preparation. Its biocompatible formulation makes it safe for use on humans. It reduces the need for sutures in certain surgeries. It is effective in moist conditions, enhancing surgical efficiency,” a scientist said.

The adhesive is suitable for a range of procedures, including ENT, vascular, cosmetic, dental and periodontal surgeries.

Its use has also been highlighted in procedures such as appendectomy, Caesarean section, hysterectomy, laparoscopy and biopsy.

“This is a safe and cheap product. Our aim is to make it more accessible to hospitals and emergency healthcare providers. While providing convenience to medical practitioners, this adhesive will also come as a comfort for patients who may no longer require sutures,” the scientist said.

Established in Hyderabad in 1944, IICT is among the oldest laboratories under CSIR. Over the years, it has developed several products and emerged as a reliable partner for the chemical and biotechnology industries.

CSIR and IICT continue to seek industry partners for the development and commercialisation of new technologies.

Several state governments have also come forward to adopt and promote indigenous technologies developed by CSIR and its laboratories.
