New Delhi, Aug 16: Vaginal yeast infection is a common fungal condition caused by the overgrowth of a fungus called Candida. It can cause intense itching, a burning sensation while urinating or during sexual intercourse, redness and thick, white discharge that may resemble cottage cheese.

The condition is generally easy to treat with antifungal creams or, in some cases, a single-dose antifungal tablet. However, health experts say women may be more prone to yeast infections during the monsoon, when humidity and moisture levels rise.

Doctors have observed an increase in women seeking medical attention for vaginal itching, discomfort and unusual discharge during the rainy season.

Gynaecologist Dr Gana Srinivas said more women do come in with such complaints during the monsoon. According to her, high humidity, increased sweating and wearing wet clothes for prolonged periods can create conditions that encourage Candida to multiply, particularly among women who are already susceptible to infections.

Dampness and trapped moisture around the body are among the major factors. Wet underwear, leggings, jeans, gym clothes and other garments that remain soaked after exposure to rain can trap heat and moisture around the vulvar area. This can reduce air circulation and create prolonged discomfort.

However, experts stress that simply getting wet in the rain does not automatically cause a yeast infection. Candida normally lives in the human body without causing problems. An infection occurs when the natural balance is disturbed and the fungus begins to multiply excessively.

Health experts also caution women against assuming that every instance of itching, burning or unusual discharge is a yeast infection. Similar symptoms can occur with other vaginal infections and conditions, making proper medical evaluation important before starting treatment.

Maintaining dryness, changing out of wet clothes promptly and avoiding prolonged exposure to damp clothing can help reduce the conditions that encourage fungal overgrowth during the monsoon.
