Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh), Sep 17: In a bizarre twist stranger than fiction, a viral 1980s-style Instagram trend has unexpectedly helped solve a 45-year-old jewellery theft case in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, after a retro-styled photograph served as the ultimate clue.
What began as a popular social media craze celebrating retro-looking portraits has miraculously brought a decades-old crime back into the spotlight.
A woman who had allegedly stolen a gold necklace from a local jewellery shop in Ujjain around 45 years ago had managed to evade the law completely. Decades later, she decided to join the viral AI trend, posting a picture of herself transformed into a retro avatar.

The photograph caught the eye of the original jewellery shop owner, who instantly recognised her distinct features and suspected she was the elusive culprit behind the historical heist.
A harmless trip down memory lane quickly paved the way for a reopened police investigation. Armed with the viral photograph, the vigilant shop owner approached local authorities, who subsequently investigated the woman's identity and dug up the long-buried complaint files. Under police questioning, she reportedly confessed to the decades-old theft.
The bizarre incident sent social media into a frenzy. An X user, @ManiYogini, posted about the viral turn of events, writing, “Time really does have a strange way of catching up with you. Especially when you put your own face on the internet... Going back to the ’80s turned out to be a little too expensive!” Echoing the public's shock, one user commented, “Such a twissst to 80’s trend,” while another added, “Ohhh... Ye to alag hi kuch hogyaaaa.”
