Mangaluru celebrates historic decision to recognise Tulu as official language

Mangaluru, Sep 18: Celebrations erupted in Mangaluru after chief minister D K Shivakumar announced that Tulu will be accorded the status of Karnataka's second official language.

Ministers and Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai were among those participating in the festivities. People were seen bursting firecrackers and celebrating the decision with great enthusiasm.

The State government's decision to grant official language status to Tulu fulfils a long-standing demand of the people of the coastal region.

Chief minister D K Shivakumar said the move was being taken to preserve and promote the Tulu language, as well as the culture and traditions of coastal Karnataka.

    Well i appreciate the efforts of all involved by this recognition but does this help in getting TULUVA quota or priority in getting jobs or any scheme .. If Yes then its helpful for many otherwise what we will do by celebrating would remain just another language and will spend of building Tuluva block....

    The Tulu language has its own unique pride and identity. In a city like Mumbai, people from different states live together and speak many different languages. But when we speak Tulu with someone around us, or even over the phone, there is a different kind of respect and curiosity among the people in the crowd. I experienced this myself once when I was in Gulbarga. One evening, during my daily walk, I was speaking to my friend over the phone in Tulu. At that time, a person who was walking behind me noticed that I was speaking Tulu. He followed me for some distance and then approached me and started speaking to me in Tulu. He told me that his family had settled in Hyderabad three generations ago. He himself was born and brought up in Hyderabad, but at home his family had always continued speaking Tulu. He spoke with great pride about the Tulu language and the rich culture and traditions of Tulunadu. That incident touched me deeply. It reminded me that language is not just a means of communicationit is a connection to our roots, our family, our history and our culture. Even after generations and thousands of kilometres away from Tulunadu, the Tulu language continues to live in the hearts and homes of Tulu-speaking families. Tulu is not just a language; it is our identity, our heritage and a living connection to Tulunadu. We should always be proud to speak, preserve and pass on our beautiful Tulu language to the next generation.
