Udupi, Sep 19: A fire broke out at a coconut processing and storage unit in Subhash Nagar, Kapu taluk, during the early hours of Saturday September 19.

The fire is suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. The flames quickly spread to the large stock of coconuts stored inside the unit.

After receiving information from local residents, two fire tenders from the Udupi Fire and Emergency Services rushed to the spot. Fire personnel launched an operation and successfully brought the blaze under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby areas.

The unit, owned by Nalini Pushpalatha Salian, has been operating in the area for several years. A large quantity of coconuts stored at the unit was destroyed in the fire.

Preliminary estimates suggest that coconuts worth around Rs 10 lac to Rs 15 lac may have been damaged in the incident. The exact extent of the loss is yet to be ascertained.

Further investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the total damage.
