Mumbai, Oct 15: Bollywood actor Imran Khan, nephew of actor Aamir Khan, has reportedly been issued a notice by Mumbai police directing him to leave India by October 28 following his participation in a protest demanding the resignation of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

The actor took part in a demonstration at Mumbai’s August Kranti Maidan on October 10, organised under the banner of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The protest called for the resignation of the chief election commissioner. Police detained Imran Khan during the demonstration.

According to reports, action has been initiated against him under the relevant provisions of the Immigration Act on the grounds that he allegedly participated in a protest despite not being an Indian citizen. Imran Khan is a US citizen by birth and holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, which permits eligible foreign citizens of Indian origin to live and work in India, subject to applicable conditions.

Following his detention at around 5.20 pm on October 10, the actor shared a photograph on Instagram from inside a police van with the caption, “Apparently I'm going for a drive.”

Zayn Khan, his cousin and an actor known for the series ‘Made in Heaven’, was also detained during the protest. He later shared an update about the incident on Instagram.

Before his detention, Imran told ANI that he had attended the protest as a resident of Mumbai concerned about restrictions on freedom of movement and people’s voices being suppressed. He said he was not representing any organisation and was participating in his personal capacity.

Former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya had written to Mumbai joint police commissioner Manoj Kumar Sharma, seeking action against Imran Khan for participating in a protest in Mumbai on Saturday in support of the Janata Party, despite being a foreign national.
