Moodbidri, Oct 22: A mother and her son died of electrocution at Varnabettu within the limits of the Paladka gram panchayat.

The deceased have been identified as Mercy Mascarenhas (45) and her son Shaun Mascarenhas (18). It is reported that while attempting to rescue her son, electricity passed through the mother as well, causing both to die on the spot.

The incident occurred while Shaun Mascarenhas, a student of Holy Rosary in Moodbidri, was hanging clothes out to dry. It is suspected that the clothesline wire came into contact with a high-tension power line, causing electricity to pass through it.

The tragic incident came to light in the morning on Thursday. It was discovered when a labourer arrived at the location for plantation work.
