Madikeri, Apr 30: Chaurira Achachya, veteran hockey player from Madikeri who captained the Karnataka hockey died of heart attack even as he was celebrating the victory of his team.

He had just finished playing a match in the 16th annual local hockey cup.

On Sunday April 29 at around 4 pm, the 59-year-old Achchayya, who had played for the state for 9 years, was celebrating the victory of his team after beating the opposition by 2 goals. At this age too, he had the fitness, stamina and the momentum to play the game. He shook hands with the opposition players, the referees, the technical team and his teammates.

But the celebration could not last long as he collapsed at 3.55 pm in the dressing room, and though Columbia hospital doctors who were present in the ground rushed to him, he could not be saved.

Achchayya, popularly known as 'Hari', leaves behind his wife Suni, son Niran and daughter Dr Nithya.

Having known his daughter from the last 9 years, I can vouch for his physical fitness. He has been a sportsman throughout his life and had been playing regularly atleast a hour or two everyday. And these cases are difficult to explain to others when they collapse.
May his soul rest in peace and god give strength to his family and friends to bear his loss.

He might have externally had the fitness, stamina and the momentum to play as said BUT his coronary arteries might not have been in the top form as required for an athlete of his age !
Active sport beyond the age of 50 needs stringent medical evaluation and expert advice from a Doc. specialised in sports medicine/cardiology.
    may his soul RIP.

I always admire these hockey players from coorg. Really shocked to here the news. It is always risky to take part in any stress based activities after a person crosses Fifty years of his life span. condolences to Achchayya's family.
