Nagpur, May 9 (IANS): Three men were killed Wednesday by an angry mob that took them for thieves who robbed homes in Nagpur, police said.
The incident took place at Bharat Nagar in Kalamna area of the city. The mob alleged that the thieves disguised themselves during the day and roamed the area.
"The residents of the area suspected that they conducted a recce of the area and looted locked homes during the night," an officer at the Nagpur Police Control Room told IANS.
The three men were attacked by an angry mob, who pelted stones and beat them with sticks, the officer said.
According to police, one person died on the spot and two others were declared dead at hospital.
Police have detained around 10 people.
Following tension in the area, the police removed the bodies from the site. Senior police officials are investigating the incident. They are also trying to identify the deceased.
