Sensex Down 26.45 Points on Selling Pressure


Mumbai, May 22 (IANS): A benchmark index for Indian equities markets was trading down 26.46 points around 1.30 p.m. Tuesday on heavy selling pressure in capital goods, fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) and healthcare stocks.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) was ruling at 16,156.80 points, down by 0.16 percent or 26.46 points from its previous close of 16,183.26 points.

The Sensex touched a high of 16,366.72 points and a low of 16,120.70 points in the intra-day trade. The Sensex midcap was down 3.37 points but smallcap was up 3.37 points.

The BSE capital goods index was down 32.70 points followed by FMCG index down 28.39 points and health care down 17.73 points.

Major Sensex losers included Tata Power, down 3.20 points at Rs.92.30; Sun Pharma, down 14.45 points at Rs.578.60; Sterlite Inds, down 1.90 points at Rs.97.85; Maruti Suzuki, down 20.35 points at Rs.1,187.15 and Larsen and Tubro (L&T), down 17 points at Rs.1,172.

Major Sensex gainers included state-owned BHEL, up 4.65 points at Rs.211.10; Tata Motors, up 5.65 points at Rs.267.40; Tata Consulting Services (TCS), up 13.50 percent at Rs.1,222.40; ICICI Bank, up 6.20 points at Rs.817 and ONGC, up 1.75 points at Rs.248.65.
