Parliamentary Panel Invites Aamir for Inputs on Medical Issues

New Delhi, Jun 19 (IANS): A parliamentary panel has invited actor Aamir Khan, who exposed malpractices in the medical sector on his "Satyamev Jayate" TV programme, for an interaction on the issue. He will appear Thursday morning with his team.

Rajya Sabha MP Shanta Kumar of the Bharatiya Janata Party, who heads the parliamentary standing committee on commerce, has invited the actor to share the knowldge they gained while researching the episode.

Aamir's spokesperson confirmed to IANS that he will be there Thursday morning to interact with the panel.

Aamir, 47, lifted the veil from the malpractices in the medical profession through his maiden TV show "Satyamev Jayate" and discussed issues like doctors taking cuts and other unethical medical practices. He presented live examples of people who could have been cured with simple medicines but were advised by doctors to undergo surgeries, robbing them of precious money.

Broadcast May 27, the well-researched episode also addressed issues like overpricing of life-saving drugs.

The expose brought brickbacks and criticism from the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which wanted Aamir to apologise. But he said his conviction in the concept and aim of the show have left him fearless of negative reactions.

"Satyamev Jayate", which marks the Bollywood's thinking actor's entry into the field of television, has so far discussed issues like female foeticide, child sex abuse and domestic violence.

In fact, parliament has only now passed a bill on stringent action aginst those guilt of child sex abuse.

The actor has struck the right chord with the audiences as people are watching the show with great interest. Aamir says this is his way of contributing to society by creating awareness.

Thank you very much Mr. Aamir Khan for exposing the malpractices, unethical medical practices & live examples of people who could have been cured with simple medicines but were advised by doctors to undergo surgeries, robbing them of precious money. I would also like to share one such thing which happened to me so that my fellow readers can get some piece of advice. My wife was suffering from severe stomach pain,so i took her to the nearby hospital in Rammurthy nagar(Bangalore) for the check up. The lady doctor(owner)there advised us to do the scan. Later when the scan report came, she told us there is a cest so we should immediately need to do a surgery, or else she cannot conceive infuture. I told my wife will go ahead & do the surgery but, my wife told me..first we shall inform our parents & then we shall take the decision. My parents & my mom-in-law told us to come back to Mangalore with the reports so that we can consult other doctor for a second opinion. So we visited Dr. Shetty, In his hospital in Surathkal, he only saw the report which we had from Bangalore & for our surprise he told us not to worry..It’s only a simple cest & it will go automatically go on her next menstrual cycle. Next month report..it was gone. Now we are blessed with one child also. If i would have not listened to parents & in-laws, my wife would have been operated without any reason. There are lot of good doctors out there doing good to the people & for the poor but, there are also these kind of doctors who are out there only to kill people. Job well done Mr. Aamir Khan
