Mangalore: Malaria and Dengue Eradication Campaign to be Held

Mangalore, Jul 3: In association with the Mangalore City Corporation, district administrators, health and family welfare department, organized a malaria and dengue eradication campaign for a month’s duration. It was inaugurated here in the Regional Advanced Pediatric Care Centre, Wenlock Hospital on July 3.

 After the inaugural, N Yogish Bhat, speaker of the legislative assembly said, ‘According to the given data, as many as 270 malaria cases were reported last year. However, it has been radically increased to 550 cases this year. To eradicate the mounting problem, the support of the people is important to keep Mangalore clean, said.

By implementing the method of strong operation and imposing high penalties to those who create these problems, solutions can be determined; he added that the method of Rs 1000 penalty fetched no adequate results earlier.

Moreover, the migrant laborers who work at construction sites have been widely affected with these diseases, hence Bhat asked the officials to take into consideration the health of these people.
J Krishna Palemar, MLA, mayor Gulzar Banu, deputy mayor Amitha Kala, MCC commissioner Dr Harish Kumar, joint commissioner Srikanth Bhat, Health officer Baskar Chandra Shetty and other dignitaries were present on the stage.  

Following the ceremony, Dr Arun Kumar, district vector borne disease control officer, addressed the press providing details about the campaign.

Explaining the proposed activities with house visits by the health officers, he said that the officers will go to each house for fever surveillance and blood smears will be collected to conclude on individual reports. In addition, the officers will educate the house owners by interpersonal communication, of the source in order to reduce breeding the mosquitoes.

As many as 30 junior health assistants from the department of health and family welfare, 10 junior health inspectors from urban health centers, 30 sponsored from MCC, 30 volunteers-BSW and MSW students will go to each house with the agenda to cover at least one lac houses of the city in one month of the campaign. Since there is little shortage of health personnel’s at the moment, the officers will concentrate more on the affected areas , he added.

Extending special emphasis for construction sites, he said that two teams with two MPW and two sprayers each with the support of two vehicles will be given for this activity.

Work Responsibility of Filed Workers
-Each worker to be allotted 1000 numbered houses.
-To complete visiting all houses within 1 month
-Fever survey and smears to be collected from people suffering with fever.
-Source reduction activities in the houses
-BCC through inter personal communication
-To maintain all proper records and submit the reports weekly.
