Mangalore, Jul 8: Kanara Catholic Educational Co-operative Society distributed scholarships to 85 Konkani-speaking students of Kannada medium schools at Catholic Centre Hall in the city on Sunday July 8.

Speaking on the occasion, chief guest Marlene Martis, director, ‘Deeds’ NGO, said, “Grab the sources of information from the wrappers of groceries to the daily newspapers. In order to reach greater heights, the hunger for reading should be a daily practice,” she said addressing the gathering of students.

Advising the Kannada medium students, she added that it is not the medium in which one studies that matter but the desire to learn more. “Most of the successful people hail from a lower background, therefore, a poor background should not be considered a barrier to success,” opined Martis, asking students to do away with the stereotypic behaviour that success is meant for the rich people.

Citing an anecdote, she encouraged children by saying that success depends on the dedication and perseverance of the individual and it has nothing to do with where you study and in which medium.

Martis lauded the management for taking up the initiative to help the poor children in their higher education.

Rudolf D’Silva, president of the society, welcomed the get-together. Anthony Saldanha, one of the directors, introduced the chief guest. George Fernandes anchored and Joseph D’Souza thanked the gathering.
