Mangalore: Ladies Hostel Break-in Gives Rise to Uncomfortable Questions
Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore
Mangalore, Jul 15: The entry and subsequent arrest of a boy in a ladies hostel in Shivbagh has become a raging issue, raising questions about the couple, the security in hostels and even the values inculcated by parents in their children.
Naveed Sheikh was caught with a girl in a ladies hostel on the night of Saturday July 13. What stunned everyone was that he used burkha as a cover, and did so every Saturday without getting caught until now! Police sources said that both the girl and the boy are from Sirsi, and study in the same college in the city.
To make matters clear, Daijiworld caught up with one of the girl's in the hostel, who, under condition of anonymity spilled the beans.
She said that Naveed and another girl in the hostel had been having an affair for quite sometime. "We had seen the burkha clad person once or twice, but did not suspect anything and thought her, or him, to be her good friend. The girl never told us about him, so there was no reason to doubt either," she said.
When asked how he was caught she said, "I was in my room, but ran out when the other girls started raising alarm. One of the girls had heard his voice coming from the girl's room. There was quite a pandemonium and someone called the police who caught him. He tried to escape by running away, but police managed to block his way."
"We were really shaken by the incident. We don't even know what to say to the girl. I heard she will be leaving the hostel soon," she said, adding that the incident had cast a shadow on other girls too.
A few friends of the boy spoke to Daijiworld and defended him saying that he was fulfilling a bet he had with the girl over entering the hostel, however, when asked how it was that he was found half-naked, they had no clear answer.
His friends were miffed that Naveed was caught while the girl escaped without a scratch on her character. "The girl was as much involved in the incident as Naveed, but why didn't the police catch her? Because of her our friend is in trouble," they said.
The police on the other hand, suspect that the watchman of the hostel too had a hand in it. They even summoned him and the hostel warden to the police station for questioning.
A parent who also has her daughter staying in a hostel in Bangalore raised concern over the issue and said that though love affairs may be common among the present youth, it was unacceptable to break into the hostel. "It is a major crime, and is a matter of concern not only for girls, the hostels but also for parents who cannot keep watch being far away," she said.
Whatever may be the case, the incident has given rise to questions that no one wants to answer.

Wed, Jul 18 2012It was a part of love jihad, why nobody from boys community protested against the "miss" use of burqua? originally burqua was not in its present shape. actual burqua we can see on Afghan women, now a days it is as sexy as other clothes showing all body curves. So the use of burqua is to be banned and the irresponsible girl also should be punished.

Mon, Jul 16 2012Covering the body of a female in public gathering is safe for herself & her family irrespective of religion. At the same time it is better to avoid face and wrist covering so that people like Naveed cannot use it as a mask to do such crimes. Both the boy and the girl should be punished severly being they know the importance of the Burka. In our capital city the crimes against females increses day by day becuse of their half naked attractive dressing specially by teenagers.

Mon, Jul 16 2012The Burkha as opposed to any headgear can be an excellent disguise for terrorists.Tomorrow a Burkha clad terrorist hiding a machine gun can slip into a school hostel or any public building and slaughter innocent people as they did in Mumbai on 26/11.

Mon, Jul 16 2012I supported SCARF and continue to do so.But I objected Burqa in Daiji column many times because of negative points. All criminals are using Burqa irrespective of sex or religions. Most of the readers are not aware that hardcore Islamic country like Pakistan instructed all ladies not to cover face when they were allowed to cross into Pakistan from Afghanistan when US was bombing Talibanis and Al Quida hideouts.Pakistan Govt fear that Taliban terrorists might enter Pakistan by wearing Burqa after their bitter experience in Lal Masjid operation (Leader of Pakistan Taliban escaped with refugees by wearing burqa). Main intention of Burqa is good, but right now I think it is not sensible to wear in public for security reason.

Dear you are advising burkha for men too? Watchmen are employed in even in Gulf countries ladies hostel, even though Burkha is mandatory there for ladies..

Mon, Jul 16 2012y are ppl so much intersted in banning burkha, in tht way, a computer is used for so many illegal activities, should we go ahead and stop or ban comuter production. Every religion has its own beliefs and culture, ppl just go and do your own work, everybody has some or the other problems, try solvin it. rather than disrespecting and pointing at other religions. Finally what i would say is, Follow and love ur religion and also respect other religions.

Sun, Jul 15 2012Yes, parents are now concerned who's daughters are staying in the hostel.Hostel warden,Hostel security and Management are mainly responsible for this fiasco.I doubt Security has hand in glove in this issue.Inclusive investigation required and Naveed should be punished under various IPC to teach lesson for those flouting rule of land.

Sun, Jul 15 2012Burqa is not a compulsion in any society except Saudi arabia....It is the law of the land there..Thats why even non muslims wear it in saudi arabia....A girl, if she feels comfortable in a burqa or just a veil what is anyones problem...Let her wear it...Its her decision...and about burqa being misused, these are one off incidents of misuse of burqa and should not be used to disregard a decent outfit that burqa is..We never talk of banning a Micro mini...why?....Because the girl wearing it is comfortable wearing it...Then what should be our problem... Live and let live.

Sun, Jul 15 2012If we parents teach our children true values and modesty, then there is no need to worry and there is no need for a watchman or security guard. The modesty itself is a burqa and it should come within the heart and it cant be forced on any one. We parents cant let everything happen in the name of freedom and technological advancement... Everything in its extreme leads to problems.... The majority of crime is happening with the use of advanced technologies...one such instrument is mobile phones...can we really stop it... no but we can teach our children to use it with responsiblitity and accountability...Wisdom, self respect, self control should prevail...For what has happened in the hostel, our society at large is to be blamed... some people have said that there is no harm and its pure love.. what love.., love cant be stolen and cheated....they should seek the blessings of their parents and enter into the institution of marriage and then practice love or lust....The sacred institution of marriage channelises legality of love and sex.....This is not love its just a time pass and no one would approve it.....Sex is sacred and part of life and by indulging in illegal sex, please dont degrade the sacred instinct of sex or sacred institution of marriage...Parents be watchful over your wards... Time has changed...
