Mangalore, Aug 18: To allay fears and panic among the north-east students over rumours of impending attacks, Oscar Fernandes, Rajya Sabha MP and Congress leader visited MV Shetty Hostel at Kankanady here on August 18.

Speaking to the north-east students, he assured them full safety and told them not to flee back. He said for any concern regarding this, they are always free to contact the local leaders and police officials who are viewing this matter as an important issue.

Oscar said that he had visited Bangalore railway station yesterday and will soon visit other centres to build confidence among the students. He asked them to fight together against the rumors, assuring full security and asked them to contact helpline numbers in times of need.

“Soon a meeting will be held in new Delhi to discuss the matter with higher officials,” he added.

Oscar raised the topic about the bulk message issue and said that messages are being monitored as a preventive measure.

U T Khadar demanded state government to take this issue seriously.  Along with security, he insisted to trace and punish the accused soon. He said, if required, the Muslim community will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr with north-east students to boost their confidence.

Addressing the media, two students from Nepal put forth their concerns. Among them, Doodle, studying physiotherapy in MV Shetty College, said that even if one percent of the north-east community is affected, it would have an impact on them.

Another nursing student named Nyimayanche said, “Our parents are scared and they want us to come back. A recent incident where a north-east student was attacked by Muslims in Mysore has created panic. He has sustained serious injuries.”

In response to this, Oscar said that the issue will be taken seriously and two MPs in Mysore will be asked to tackle this.

A memorandum was also submitted by the students on behalf of North East Students Welfare Association pleading their security.

Naveen D’Souza, corporator, P V Mohan, Stany Alvares, Moideen Bava, Dr U T Ifthikar among others were present.
