Mangalore, Aug 21: Two patients suffering from  ulcerative colitis  which failed the medical line of treatment were treated by total proctocolectomy (removal of the colon and rectum) and ileal J pouch with ileo analanatomosis, recently at Father Muller Medical College Hospital.

It consists of a surgical procedure in which the large intestine is bypassed and the lower portion of the small intestine is directly attached to the anal canal. It is also called as anan ileal pouch-anal anastomosis).

Both the patients recovered well and totally cured of their condition. This is one of the rare kinds of surgical approaches and the fact of the matter that patients have recovered and doing well is a case that stands out.

Ulcerative colitis is a multiple ulcerated lesion involving the rectum and the entire colon resulting in troublesome diarrhea, blood and mucus in stools with recurrent attacks and abdominal pain.  Usually this condition is treated medically with steroids, antibiotics and immuno suppressive therapy. 

Failed medical treatment requires surgery. The procedures were done by a team of doctors consisting of Dr Rakesh Rai , Dr Erel Diaz (Senior Surgeon) ,  Dr Suhith,  and Dr Rajeev. An anaesthesia team of  Dr Kishan Shetty,  Dr Preeti Ball assisted the surgery.
